Former President John Dramani Mahama has explained that it amounts to monetization of politics when officials who are implicated in corruption cases are exonerated by the appointing authority without due investigation.
The former President made the assertion during the
commemoration of the 31st December 1981 coup at Winneba last Tuesday, insisting
such an act gives rise to the electorate asking for money before they vote for
“When people indulge in corruption or waste of
resources and you resort to clearing them without investigation, it feels monetization,”
President’s comment is dig at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who has
cleared several appointees of his who have been implicated in alleged
corruption cases after some form of investigation.
Many, notably civil society organisations, have decried monetization,
basically described as the excessive use of money in political activiities such
as campaigning, in Ghana’s politics, maintaining that it does not augur well
for Ghana’s young democracy.
The ceremony several other speakers apart from former
President John Mahama bemoaned monetization in Ghana’s political landscape.
I’ve never been
corrupt – Akufo-Addo
President Nana Akufo-Addo during his recent engagement with the press at the seat of government stated unequivocally that has he has never been corrupt.
“I’m certainly not corrupt, I continue to say that I’m not corrupt, I’ve not been corrupt; I’ve not taken money from anybody to give anybody contracts”, he told journalists at the Jubilee House on Friday, 13 December 2019 when he interacted with them.
The President also said he has only two family members in his government, thus, ricocheted accusations by the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that he has 51 relatives in his “family-and-friends” government.
“I’m not presiding over a government of family-and-friends”, the President rebuffed, explaining: “Yes, only two members of my family in the names Ofori-Atta, who is the Minister of Finance, is my cousin. He happened also, at the time, to have been the person who was responsible for the NPP’s fundraising drive; nobody made any criticism of him when he was in that position and I don’t think it’s so difficult for somebody who has been the fundraiser to transition into the Finance Minister”.
