Paramount Chief of the Talensi Traditional Area Tongraan Naab Kugbilson Nalebegtang has called for restraint and consensus in the matter of the location of the yet to be constructed Airport in the Upper East region.
Speaking on the PM Show on Bolgatanga based Yem Radio monitored by MyNewsGh.com, the overlord of the Talensi Traditional Area charged the Minister for Aviation Joseph Kofi Adda to widen his consultation on the matter so as to build consensus and find the most suitable and fair location for the Airport.
The Tongraana’s call comes on the back of comments made by
the Aviation Minister suggesting that Navrongo is most suitable for the siting
of the airport.
These plans to relocate the much anticipated facility from
Sumbrungu where a site was agreed and cleared for construction in 1995 sparked
some protests and apprehension, a situation that has generated heated arguments
over the necessity and intent for the planned relocation.
Mr Kofi Adda argued that the Paga Airstrip, since time
immemorial, has proven to be appropriate for the intended purpose of an
However, the revered traditional ruler who doubles as a
Member of the Council of State found the comments of the Minister as worrying.
“We should exercise maximum restraint so that we will
sit down as a team with all of us putting our heads together to agree on the
most ideal location for this airport. It is not a matter of talking about
pre-colonial days issues. It’s a matter of looking at an ideal situation most
convenient to all parties both technically and socially in terms of proximity
to all who live in the region,” he said.
He further stated that it is prudent for the airport to be
sited in a place that is comfortable to fly in-within without problems having
to be associated with issues outside the borders of Ghana.
He added that “Ideally if we sit down and look at it
carefully without any special interest whatsoever but that it is something that
is going to serve all of us, we should have one voice and I don’t think that
currently we have gone through that kind of discussions. As for me as a
Paramount Chief, I need to advise all parties for us to have cool heads and
ensure that we do the right thing and make sure that everybody is reasonably
comfortable. The Aviation Minister should spread the discussion wider than what
is happening now. It is in the interest of all parties that we have an airport
in the Upper East region.”
The Tongraana further disclosed that he held a meeting with
Mr Kofi Adda on the matter following rumours of plans to relocate the airport
According to him, the minister admitted that discussions on the relocation were ongoing but no decision had been arrived at yet.
“I had to meet with him to find out what the situation
was and he admitted that it is something that is being discussed but no
decision had been taken because he had not even sighted the drawings for the
Sumbrungu one. I had to go and get the drawings for the Sumbrungu one and
present it to him. We have not since then had any face to face discussions on
it as I speak. As a Member of the Council of State and a Chief I need to at
least have that kind of rapport with our colleagues to make sure that they do
things in the manner that everybody would be comfortable with” he
