Vice President of the republic of Ghana, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said no leader in the entire history of modern Ghana has paid close attention to Ghana’s Zongos like his boss, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The Vice President who continues to enjoy loyalty and love from Zongos made these remarks when he addressed a consultative meeting of the Council of Zongo Chiefs in the Eastern Region.
He was joined by His Eminence, the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, Osabarima Adusei Peasah IV, Chief of Tafo and representative of the Okyenhene in the meeting held at Kyebi.
The Vice President noted that “no Government since independence has paid as much attention to the development of the Zongo communities as the government of President Akufo-Addo as evidenced by his establishment of a Ministry for Zongo and inner city development, Zongo Development Fund and the numerous infrastructure projects going on across Zongo communities in Ghana”. He said to loud applause.
Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed to the Zongo chiefs the “commitment of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to continue to be the listening President that he is and shall continue to consult with the chiefs and people of Ghana, as he goes about the business of running the affairs of state”.
Zongo girls for Cuba
A first batch of forty (40) students from Zongo and Inner Cities in Ghana who were selected to undergo further studies in medicine in Cuba left Ghana last month, a boost for the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government.
It will be recalled that the Government of Cuba accepted to train forty (40) brilliant but needy medical students a year from Zongo, inner-city and other deprived communities in Ghana following a proposal by the Vice President of the Republic, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to the Government of Cuba to extend the special arrangement between the two countries for the training of health personnel in deprived communities.
Vice President Bawumia made the proposal when he held bilateral talks with the President of Cuba, H.E. Miguel Diaz-Canel as part of a two-day official visit to the Caribbean country this year.
The President of Cuba noted that over the years the government of Cuba has tried to demystify the training of doctors by making sure the study of medicine is not the preserve of the elite. Cuba has 80,000 doctors as a result.
