Jameela Jamil has hit out at claims she’s got Munchausen’s syndrome, following viral online accusations she’d been lying about her previous illnesses.
Not long after trolls began alleging The Good Place star of ‘making up’ various ailments she’d spoken about in the past, the actor – who came out as queer last week – put them back in their place as fans rallied to accuse the haters of ableism.
Munchausen’s syndrome is classed as a mental disorder in which a person repeatedly and deliberately acts as if they have a physical or mental illness when they are in fact not sick.
In the past, the star has been open about having congenital hearing loss and labyrinthitis, as well as hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome which causes loose joints, joint pain, stretchy skin and abnormal scar formation.
She’s also spoke at length about an incident at the age of 17 when she was struck by a car, breaking several bones and damaging her spine, crediting it with ‘changing her life’.
Addressing claims she’d made everything up in the thread, which quoted various interviews and tweets the star had done in the past, Jameela addressed the palaver on Wednesday.

‘First I’m lying about my sexuality, now I’m now being accused of munchausens?’ she wrote. ‘By an unhinged idiot who didn’t even realise in all her “research” that my car accident injury stories are “different” because they were about TWO SEPARATE CAR ACCIDENTS 13 years apart? You can keep it.’
Jameela went on to add to the doubters: ‘Ehlers Danlos Syndrome means always having people doubt your illness and injuries because you look okay. #edsawareness #itisntinyourhead #imsorrypeopleared*cks.’
She continued: ‘Man, if as many people spent their time and energy helping others/fighting injustice as they do dragging and slandering people on the internet the world would be in such good shape.’
Sharing a quote about the strength in a woman who isn’t afraid to fall because ‘she knows how to rise’, Jameela made it clear she’s not about to stop the good fight due to the trolls.

‘Not afraid of you or your dumb internet conspiracy theories. Keep them coming,’ she wrote. ‘You just add to my relevance. I’m gonna keep helping people with eating disorders, and changing laws and global policies to protect kids and their mental health and there’s NOTHING you can do about it.’
It comes days after the Brit star said she was ‘overwhelmed’ after coming out due to criticism over her judge role on upcoming show Legendary – the move to share her sexuality causing just as much uproar.
And, speaking about the news, the 33-year-old explained she chose a bad time to make her announcement.
‘Well. Last week was a perfect clusterf**k,’ she began. ‘It was completely overwhelming.’
She continued: ‘The sequence of events was insane, a misunderstanding was left uncorrected for too long, and misinformation spread too far, too fast, then my timing was bad, and in a moment of distress and pain, personal things were blurted out because when you have a secret for decades and you’re traumatised, it always feels like it might just f**king burst out of you at any given moment, even the most inappropriate and unfortunate ones.
‘I thankfully chose the *most* inappropriate and unfortunate time, maybe ever, for mine. So now you don’t have to feel embarrassed about yours.
‘I PEAKED FOR ALL OF US! But timing aside. Better out than in, and thank you for the thousands of messages of kindness and deeply personal letters from strangers and people I know, coming out to me privately.’
‘I don’t take it lightly and am happy for you that you felt ready to tell even one person,’ Jameela added. ‘Do it whenever you feel the time is right, as long as you think you’ll be safe. Don’t feel bad for hiding it for as long as you need, and move at your own pace.
‘But feel no shame about getting it off your chest and know you aren’t alone. There is a huge community of people who understand you, respect you and stand with you.
‘On we go, hoping this week will be calmer than the last, and sending everyone the most love. Jam.’
