Many of us were delighted when Julian Assange was jailed for his shameful bail-jumping antics at the Ecuadorean embassy. We found him an irritating narcissist with misguided views on many things and an inflated idea of his own importance — but these are not crimes. Since Sweden has dropped its charges against him, Mr Assange should therefore be deported, as an undesirable alien, back to Australia whence he sprang.
It should be unthinkable for a nation with a liberal tradition like Britain, with our commitment to free thinking and personal liberty, to dream of deporting Mr Assange to the US to face what are essentially political charges. I am no fan of WikiLeaks or its smug founder, but we don’t do political prosecutions in Britain. Nor should we do political deportations.
