A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah says Sam Okudzeto’s call on the Electoral Commission(EC) to start compiling the New Voters register in places which have not been locked down is a clear indication that he is an ignorant regarding of COVID-19.
A member of the Council of State and a leading legal brain in Ghana, Sam Okudzeto has called on the Electoral Commission to start compiling the voters register in areas where there’s no lock down.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM, the Legal luminary said ““Our cases of the Coronavirus is not as dramatic as it is in many countries which means that we only have few pockets in the two big municipalities and few of the smaller ones. So since the lockdown is not the whole of Ghana, the EC should start the registration in areas where there is no lockdown”.
But reacting to the opinion expressed by Sam Okudzeto, Dr. Omane Boamah who is a leading member of the NDC and a Medical Doctor said the Lawyer clearly does not understand issues bothering the deadlly virus in Ghana.
He observed that if Sam Okudzeto was aware of the unpreparedness for larger number of cases number of positive cases, he would not have expressed such an opinion.
He said “I vehemently disagree with the respected Statesman Sam Okudzeto. He doesn’t appreciate the nuances of the Coronavirus disease and the state of (un)preparedness”.
WHY THE NEED FOR VOTERS REGISTER COMPILATION AND OPPOSING VIEWS
The Electoral Commission of Ghana before the COVID-19 entered Ghana was lacing its boot to organize a nationwide compilation of a new voters register.
According to the EC, it would have also replace the old verification machines in order to fix the verification challenges the old ones faced. Among other things was an introduction of facial recognition.
The Electoral Commission earlier announced that Ghana Card and passport will be used for identification.
However, the National Democratic Congress and other opposition parties believe that there’s no need for a new voters register.
These parties have organized several demonstrations to drum home the need to avoid wasting monies which could be channeled into something productive for the country.
