Information reaching MyNewsGh.com indicates that the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama is now torn between choosing a running mate from the Volta region or the Ashanti region.
According to sources close to MyNewsGh.com that is the reason why former President John Mahama has delayed in naming a running mate to aid his return to power despite earlier suggestions he has settled on someone from the Ashanti Region
Whilst the Founder of the party Jerry John Rawlings prefers a running mate from the Ashanti region which has the biggest Akan group in Ghana, some key opinion leaders in the party prefer a Voltarian.
The opinion leaders believe that since former President Rawlings became a past leader of the Republic of Ghana, the Volta region has not gotten the opportunity for a son or daughter to be elected as a flag bearer or nominate a running mate from the Volta region.
Former President Rawlings, MyNewsGh.com learnt, believes the NDC can make an impact in this year’s elections if the flagbearer chose a running mate from the Ashanti region.
Some election watchers believe the Ashanti region will still vote massively for the ruling New Patriotic Party, while others think getting a running mate from the Volta region will inspire the aggrieved Voltarians who were perceived to have shun the party in 2016 to come out and vote massively for the party’s flagbearer.
There are also schools of thoughts that the more Mahama delays in naming a flagbearer the more his chances of returning to power are slim.
This is because an opposition party in Ghana will usually name its running mate at least a year to an election to enable him or her canvass for enough votes across the country.
Many names have so far been bundled as the likely running mate of the NDC. They include former Finance Minister, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor; former Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama; former President Rawlings daughter and Member of Parliament for Korley Klottey, Ezienator Rawlings; MP for Ahafo North, Eric Opoku and Alex Mould who is both a native of Accra and the Ashanti region.
It is however unclear which of the aforementioned names will the former President settle on as his running mate to wrestle power from the ruling NPP.
