The Electoral Commission of Ghana has responded to what it described as untruth claims by the National Democratic Congress(NDC) of it being in bed with the New Patriotic Party(NPP) to rig the impending election to favour its candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The NDC at a Press Conference addressed by its Chairman, Elder Ofosu Ampofo alleged that the NPP, Electoral Commission and the National Identification Authority are conniving to rig 2020 elections in favour of Akufo-Addo and the NPP.
Ofosu Ampofo said the use of the National Identification card and Passport despite the fact that a number of people do not have access to these forms of identification is a clear indication of the fact that the EC has plans to rig the impending elections.
But responding to the various claims by the NDC, the Electoral Commission in a statement sighted by MyNewsGh.com said it’s not oblivious of the fact that there is a calculated attempt by the NDC to repeatedly peddle untruths about the Commission to tarnish its image and create disaffection for it.
According to the Electoral Commission, it is shocking for the NDC to assert that the Commission is in bed with another political party to rig the elections because the election process is transparent at all levels.
The Commission said as an independent body, it is mandated to conduct elections by being free and fair and that is what the Electoral Commission.
On allegations that the EC wants to rig the election hence the insistence on the use of the Passport and the National Identification Card as the only form of identification accepted when the exercise starts, the EC said the Ghana card has been a requirement since 2012 and therefore the EC will not be engaged in any illegality if it depends on data from the National Identification Authority.
The EC reiterated its commitment to adhere to safety protocols laid down by the Ghana Health Service to ensure the safety of people who will be at the various polling centres to register.
