A ‘failed’ New Patriotic Party(NPP) parliamentary aspirant in the Assin South Constituency of the Central Region, Mr Joseph Kofi Damtse, has vowed to run as an independent candidate for the 2020 polls, accusing the party leadership of having disqualified him unjustly.
Mr Damtse has been deemed by the party leadership as unfit to contest the parliamentary primaries. This, he alleged, is a machination of the leadership to protect the incumbent NPP Member of Parliament for the area Reverend John Ntim Fordjour.
He indicated that the harsh decision by high profile members of the party to deny him the opportunity to contest the parliamentary primaries has caused divisions in the party within the constituency.
“Some so-called faceless big-men within the Party I have toiled and supported for decades think I don’t deserve to represent them in Parliament, hence their unflinching determination to disqualify me at all cost,” he is quoted to have told the Ghana News Agency.
“I am ready to contest as an independent candidate, after all they say I am not a member of the Party for reasons best known to them,” he declared.
Mr Damtse, who has been contesting the parliamentary primaries since 2008 noted that leadership of the party is yet to give him reasons for his disqualification.
“I am disappointed that my party, believed to be the icon of democracy in Ghana, has failed woefully to officially inform me about the reasons for my disqualification,” he bemoaned.
Mr Damtse added that he was committed to the welfare of the people, urging them to vote for him.
This comes barely a week after Member of Parliament (MP) of the Fomena Constituency, Hon. Andrews Amoako Asiamah, who entered the legislature on the ticket of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2016 announced he stand for a second term as an Independent Candidate.
The first-term legislator did not file to contest in the upcoming primaries, 2nd National Vice Chairman of the NPP, F.F. Antoh said in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com.
“I have heard he is going independent but I can tell him that is not going to help him; by this he has automatically evicted himself from the party”, he said.
