Assin Central Member of Parliament(MP), Kennedy Agyapong has confessed that if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had not protected some Members of Parliament(MPs), more would have lost their seats.
The New Patriotic Party on Saturday went to the polls to elect candidates who will represent the party during the 2020 elections.
In all, 108 Constituencies where elections were held, 40 incumbents were unseated.
Speaking on Accra-based Atinka TV monitored by MyNewsGh.com, the lawmaker said a lot more MPs would have lost their seats if the Party didn’t protect them.
According to him, the party failed the lawmakers because over the years they never provided support for them although he suggested that the party should.
He noted that if you do not get an appointment as a Minister when your government comes to power, you’ll struggle to make it as an MP because you will have to only depend on your meager salary to fulfill the needs of the constituent.
“The party failed theses MPs I must say. If they did not protect some of them by disallowing a contest, some more would have lost their seats. If your government comes to power and you’re not appointed a Minister, you’ll suffer and be begging for support from people because the demands are not easy,” he said in an interview on Atinka TV.
“Parliament is difficult so I get shocked when I see people fighting over being Parliamentarians. This should be a lesson to the Party that when they come to power they need to support the MPs by giving them contracts so that the monies they make from these contracts will be used to handle issues in their constituencies.”
He noted that most members of Parliament are bedeviled with loans to the extent that recently an MP took home GHC 167 because of the various loans he had to service out of his meager salary.
