The much talked about the victory of the Upper East Regional Minister Tangoba Abayage in the just ended Parliamentary Primary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been described as a making of the seat of government.
Ms. Tangoba Abayage defeated Joseph Kofi Adda, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the Navrongo Central constituency who doubles as Minister in charge of Aviation in a bid to represent the New Patriotic Party in the December 2020 parliamentary elections.
Prior to her declaration of intention to join the race for the seat, the former Ghana Ambassador to Italy discounted suggestions that she was being positioned as Upper East Regional Minister in order to prepare her to oust the longest-serving Member of Parliament for the Navrongo Central constituency, Joseph Kofi Adda.
Speaking in an earlier interview with Albert Azongo on Bolgatanga based Yem Radio monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Tangoba Abayage stated emphatically that “The Jubilee house has not given me a pesewa to campaign. All my resources for this campaign were raised by me, friends and those who believe in my aspirations”.
Notwithstanding Madam Abayage’s denial of support from the seat of government which has been referred to in this context as the ‘powerhouse’, a member of the communications team of the opposition National Democratic Congress in the Upper East region John Paul Danka has forcefully argued that the Aviation Minister is a victim of a grand scheme from the Presidency to crash his ambition of getting re-elected to parliament.
According to him, one doesn’t need to be a clairvoyant to spot the agenda to give the former Ambassador an opportunity to be elected to parliament following her reassignment to the position of Regional Minister from an earlier Ambassadorial position.
“What happened in Navrongo is clearly a Jubilee house project. From the onset, it was obvious that madam was being prepared for the Navrongo seat. An agenda Kofi Adda did not see or saw it but couldn’t do anything about it. To remove someone from an Ambassadorial position to Regional Minister could not just be a coincidence when we all knew that there was a reason for it” he said on Yem Radio in Bolgatanga.
“For me, Kofi Adda is a victim of circumstance and if care is not taken that will lead to serious problems for the party in the constituency which may lead to defections. The man we are talking about here is not just anybody. He is an old dog in the game who should not be underrated. I just hope they can be able to make amends and if even he decides to forgive and support, trust me some of his supporters will not do it” he added.
John Paul Danka further argued that the results from Saturday’s internal contest show that Ms. Tangoba Abayage beat her contender at polling stations in areas known to be strongholds of the NDC while Joseph Kofi Adda polled appreciable votes from electoral areas inclined to the NPP.
Meanwhile, the now parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party in the constituency has already served notice of her resolve to reach out to the defeated MP and solicit his support in the December elections.
“Honorable Kofi Adda is my brother and that is one thing people don’t know. He is my senior brother. While giving my acceptance speech I’ll stand here and say that it is an internal fight. Maybe I was just a bit naughty and decided to challenge my senior brother and somehow I was able to put him down small. But I’m going to look for him because our people say that the child knows how to run but does not know how to hide. He is going to be the elder at home sitting and giving us advice. We will work together,” she said in her victory speech.
