Barring any last-minute changes, former President Dramani Mahama will today name a running mate in the person of former Education Minister, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang ahead of the 2020 polls.
A Former National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is however cautioning the National Executive Committee(NEC) to desist from choosing a candidate from the Central Region again.
According to Yaw Boateng Gyan, any such move will be disastrous for the party.
He argued that apart from Mr Mahama all other running mates came from the Central Region which include the late Kow Nkensen Arkaah, former President Atta Mills and late Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur.
“If you have studied NDC since 1992, the vice-presidential candidate hover around Central Region. From Arkaah to my own good friend Professor Mills and to Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur; so central region has had enough”, he mentioned on an Accra-based radio station Monday 6th July, 2020, monitored by MyNewsGh.com
“We need to look elsewhere, where we can get gold, but when you talk some people will be accusing you. Please please politics of party making should benefit the grassroots rather”, he pointed out.
Explaining further he said “grassroots are speaking. If the NEC, Council of Elders and John Mahama…if they are listening to me, they should look elsewhere. There are lots of people who possess such qualities to become running mate, irrespective of the person’s age.”
“John Mahama has only four years left. Anyone who will pair him should understand that they will leave power together. Then the party will sit down bring two new fresh people then the campaign will have four strong people”, he mentioned.
He added that “By God’s grace if we win power, President takes part of the country, Vice President takes part of the country, new presidential candidate and running mate also take part of the country. We can then comb the whole of the country so NDC becomes a household name again”
