The General Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Asiedu Nketia known in Public life as General Mosquito has said that the exorbitant charge of GHS100,000 as the filing fees for Presidential candidates is a recipe for corruption.
The Electoral Commission has pegged filing fee for Presidential candidates at GHC100,000 with Parliamentary candidates paying 10,000.
Some opposition parties have complained about the amount which is a hundred percent increase to the amount paid in 2016. But the Deputy General Secretary for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Obiri Boahen has said parties that cannot raise the amount should leave the contest; a deviation from the party’s stance four years ago.
Reacting to the amount, General Secretary for the National Democratic Congress, Asiedu Nketia said “If you’re going to put people in office and the process of getting into that office is so expensive that the salaries of elected officials cannot be expected to reasonably defray the cost of getting into that office, then it is obvious that the elected person would have to look elsewhere to defray the cost”.
Asiedu Nketia could not fathom what the monies being taken by the Electoral Commission was meant for saying “at least we know that when political parties are fixing their filing fees, the purpose of the filing fees is to partly raise money to defray the cost of holding the elections itself, otherwise the activity cannot happen”.
The NDC General Secretary said political parties have been fighting for state sponsorship in order to reduce the cost on political parties.
“And also it is no news that political parties have been arguing for some state funding so that politicking becomes less expensive in the country. So far we don’t seem to have gotten any part-funding or subsidy or anything. So parties are left to their own design as to how to raise funds to conduct their internal activities.”
