Former Bihar DGP Gupteshwar Pandey
- Gupteshwar Pandey has caused quite a stir with his voluntary retirement
- Rumours are doing rounds that he might enter politics and contest the upcoming Bihar elections
Patna: Former Director General of Police (DGP) Bihar Gupteshwar Pandey on Saturday met with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar but remained coy on his political ambitions. He said that he is yet to decide whether to contest the forthcoming Bihar Assembly elections or not.
After meeting the Bihar CM, Pandey said, “I came here to meet CM Nitish Kumar and to thank him as he gave me absolute freedom to serve my duties as DGP.”
When asked whether he intends to take a political plunge ahead of the Assembly elections in the state, the former DGP Bihar said, “I have yet not taken any decision on contesting polls.”
It should be noted that Gupteshwar Pandey was heavily involved in the Mumbai-Bihar Police fiasco that broke out a couple of months back during the investigation in Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.
He has been in the news for his controversial remarks in the case related to Sushant’s death and sexist comments on Rhea Chakraborty.
Last week, he announced his voluntary retirement from police services, triggering rumours of his joining politics to contest the Bihar elections, which are scheduled to be held on October 28.
Congress questions timing of Pandey’s political plunge
After announcing his retirement, Pandey asserted that he is a “free man” now and when asked about his political ambitions, he replied, “What’s the harm in joining politics”.
He has been a vocal supporter of Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and his recent meeting with the CM suggests that he might end up joining either the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)) or the Janata Dal United (JDU).
His plans, however, have not gone down well with the Opposition as Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury questioned the credibility of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death probe by the central agencies.
While speaking to media, Chowdhury said, “Right from the beginning, BJP is playing politics over Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. No one knows what the ED and CBI have found so far. The issue is being diverted to the NCB drug probe now involving all actresses.”
Taking aim at Gupteshwar Pandey, the Congress leader added, “Bihar DGP who pushed for the CBI probe in the death case is being made a candidate for upcoming elections by the ruling party in the state. We are hearing NCB officials probing drug issue are very close to BJP and PM Modi.”
