Previously the Republicans gave us John McCain/Sarah Palin. I’m a Vietnam veteran, so McCain was a true war hero, but he also had accomplished exactly nothing in Congress in 31 years and they coupled him with Palin. A county executive has more experience than her. Then we had Hillary Clinton, whose major achievement had been marrying the right guy then standing by him as he sexually abused a naive 22-year-old intern. Can’t forget Nixon and Agnew, who had to resign, and now Kamala Harris. Good Lord, this is really the best our political parties can give to vote for? Why isn’t there a “none of the above” option?
Of course, we citizens bear some of the blame. Just look at Monroe County, N.Y., where I live, where last year we had a choice between another evil career politician (from the most corrupt state legislature in the nation, no less) and a brain surgeon. And yes, we’ve just elected that career politician again.
So what do we do? Get involved! Don’t let the current band of political hacks get away with this garbage. Jump into your local elections and party process and demand more. Demand that the lying mud-slinging campaign technique stop. Period. Make elections about issues. But most of all, we have to get better people involved as candidates. We’ve got to stop electing geriatrics. Where are you young people? But don’t throw in more eccentrics like AOC, please.
Let’s throw out the current band of political hacks, at all levels. And let’s vote for candidates, not parties anyway. In 45 years of voting I haven’t voted for many regular party candidates, maybe Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush, and this year wrote in Nikki Haley and Condi Rice, both Republicans, and considered Democrat Jim Webb. In New York state, we should just start over.
